Beyond the Marriage Certificate: When Consent Becomes a Legal Question

Personal Status Law

Marriage is more than a ceremony, a signature, or a promise exchanged before family and friends. It is a commitment carrying legal obligations and responsibilities.

But what happens when the consent given at the time of marriage is called into question?

Under the personal status laws applicable to certain Christian communities in Lebanon, the validity of a marriage may be challenged on specific legal grounds, including circumstances affecting matrimonial consent or the capacity to undertake essential marital obligations.

It is important, however, to distinguish between a marriage that has become difficult and one that may have been legally invalid from the outset.

Disappointment, incompatibility, or the breakdown of a relationship does not automatically establish grounds for annulment. Each situation requires careful examination of the circumstances existing at the time of marriage, the applicable legal provisions, and the available evidence.

At AS Law Firm, we approach these matters with the seriousness and discretion they deserve, recognizing that questions surrounding marriage often touch the most personal aspects of an individual's life.

Because understanding how a marriage ended is not always the same as understanding how it began.
